Join Me Tomorrow for a Substack Live Conversation on How Americans Will Vote
A Substack Election Dialogue with Milan Singh of the Yale Youth Poll
Dear readers
Tomorrow, I’ll be joined by fellow Substacker
for a live conversation at noon Eastern time (9am Pacific) to break down the key issues driving voter behavior in the 2024 election. We’ll explore the myths and facts around shifting voter preferences— like what’s behind Democratic struggles with black and Hispanic men, what young voters really care about, and whether gimmicky policy proposals like "no tax on tips" are likely to sway marginal voters.I hope you’ll join us live for the conversation by hitting the button below — if you do, you’ll even have the opportunity to submit questions for us to answer. To participate, you’ll need to download the Substack app, so go ahead and do that now so you’ll be able to join the conversation. This event is open for all subscribers.
Why this conversation? When Substack approached me a few weeks ago asking me to do one of these chats as part of their Substack Election Dialogues series, I immediately thought of Milan because I saw him give a fantastic presentation this summer at WelcomeFest in which he synthesized polling data from Blueprint on myths and facts about the youth vote — a presentation much along the lines of this guest post he wrote in June for Slow Boring.
So much media coverage of young voters anchors on left-wing campus protesters at top colleges, even though the average young voter is not a college student, the average college student does not attend a highly selective institution, and the average student at a highly selective institution is not participating in a Gaza-related encampment. Milan, who is now running the Yale Youth Poll, brings the data to help us understand what’s actually disaffecting the young voters Democrats rely on — and what’s driving other realignments in the parties’ demographic coalitions. Since those realignments may end up being highly consequential for this election’s outcome, I think it’s the perfect time to have this conversation.
How can you tune in? Click here to download the Substack app.
If you’re not able to join us live, we’ll miss you, but we’ll also be distributing an audio version of our conversation to Very Serious readers later in the week.
See you for the conversation,
Josh
If you are having any issues downloading the Substack app, follow the steps below:
Go to the Apple or Android app store on your mobile device and search for Substack. Alternatively, you can click this link on your mobile device to get there.
Download the Substack app.
Sign in with the email address that you use for Substack—the one where you receive my newsletters.
To finish logging in, Substack will send a verification email to your mobile device. All you have to do is open your email app on your phone, locate the email from Substack with the subject line “Finish signing in to Substack,” and you’re almost there. Tap the orange button in that email to finish logging into the app.
If you’re new to the app, you’ll go through Substack’s regular onboarding process. This takes a few minutes but is simple to complete. You’ll probably want to get this up and running this morning if you don’t have the app already, or do it at least 15 minutes before we go live.
Once you’ve successfully logged in, you’ll land on the app’s home screen. When I am live, the first “post” at the top of your app will be my live video. All you need to do is click on this to join the livestream. Below is an example of what the app looked like when Chris Best, Substack’s CEO, did a live video.
Note: If you don’t see me in your app, I probably haven’t gone live yet. Just wait a few minutes and I will show up. And if for some reason I am not showing up in your app, use the search icon to search for me,
. You can join the live video from there too.
