Re: Sardinia My wife and I went 15-20 years ago now; so take this FWIW. We liked Villa Las Tronas in Alghero because of the balcony overlooking the water, though the decor was far too formal for us. We had one of the best meals of our lives at Hotel Ristorante La Gallura, but I think the owner and chef, Rita Denza, died since we visted.
For me, Sardinia is wonderful for its cuisine, (spiny lobster, pasta with clams and bottarga, and muggine/red mullet), history; and culture. If you are looking for a beach vacation, I think South Carolina and Mexico are easier and just as good.
