I can't think of a national figure that will benefit from a return to normal.
While best for the country, the moderate middle is too small to get elected.
In my 10-35-5-5-35-10 view of the political spectrum a politician has to be fairly ultra on each end to get thru their primaries. That just leaves those of us in the middle to vote for least worst. Which is frankly what they generally end up vying for to get elected.
This perfectly describes Ron DeSantis. He’s ruthless about capitalizing on anything that will give him a political advantage, constantly calculating and looking for red meat to throw to his base. It’s almost exhausting to watch (in my head: “Really? You’re doing that?”). Signing the bill preventing transgender athletes from playing with those of the gender they switched to on Pride Day was particularly heartless. And if he gets the ‘24 nomination, he’ll then pivot more toward the center to try to capture the independent and moderate voters on both sides of the aisle. Then if he gets elected, he’ll pivot back to the right, at least as far as he can without alienating the swing voters. It’s a smart strategy. It’s just a shame he has to look like a jerk and peddle to Trump’s base and all of the silliness that comes with it in order to get to the top spot. I just couldn’t do it. I’d have to be a never Trump Republican. But I couldn’t peddle to the far left either (though I think it would be easier for me). It’s a shame our politics is this way right now. Maybe in the future moderates will be more prominent. I hope so.
Just so refreshingly sane, thoughtful and civil.....Thank you

Ultra to get nominated.
Moderate to get elected.
Retreat back to the base once elected.
Sad for the country really.
The rest mostly just vote by letter.

Same here.
Couldn't vote for trump in either election.
Just couldn't do it!
Went Biden in the last election.
All the talk of moderation and unity after years of insanity.
So hopeful.
But have had to watch the DeSantis Two Step just to the left.
So disappointing.
Not as bad as trump has not softened the blow.
